Events in San Jose

San Jose hosts big outdoor events throughout the year, from Christmas in the Park at Plaza de César Chávez to festivals at Guadalupe River Park, History Park in Kelley Park, and the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. There are also thousands of private gatherings in backyards and community spaces.

For permitted events, San Jose has two main paths. Events on city streets or private property go through the Office of Cultural Affairs, with the application due at least 45 days before the event. Events in city parks use the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) special park use process. Either way, the site plan must show portable toilet locations, and equipment, toilets included, must be removed within 24 hours or by 7 a.m. the next business day. Book pickup to match.

  • Quinceañeras and first birthdays
  • Backyard weddings and receptions
  • Street festivals and cultural events

Sizing rule of thumb

Guests~4-hour event
Up to 501 unit
51–1002 units
101–1503 units
151–2004 units

This is a common industry rule of thumb, not a regulation. Add units for longer events or when alcohol is served, and include at least one accessible unit for public events. Add handwashing where there's food.
